About the Conference

The Centre for Development of Teaching & Learning (CDTL) of the National University of Singapore (NUS) is hosting the Higher Education Campus Conference (HECC) on 18 November 2019 (Monday) at CDTL.

 

This year’s theme is “Advancing a culture of teaching: Diversity and inclusivity to optimise learning”.  It builds upon conversations started at the 2018 Teaching and Learning in Higher Education Conference on “Connecting Learning, Research, and Teaching”. 

 

The theme underscores the role that higher education plays in nurturing a culture that appreciates and values diversity and inclusivity. Discussions include student partnership, programme design in curricular and co-curricular contexts, teaching and learning practices, assessment and evaluation, and use of technology.

 

This one-day campus conference aims to bring together faculty and staff members, and students in sharing ideas and good practices that foster diversity and inclusivity in different teaching contexts (formal and informal) to optimise student learning.

 

This year, we re-name "Teaching and Learning in Higher Education: Campus Conference" to Higher Education Campus Conference (HECC) to better recognise the inter-relatedness of the three key forces in a research-intensive university - learning, research, and teaching.

 

Sub-themes

The conference theme implies the question of how we can optimise learning through teaching practices that support diversity and inclusivity. Contributions that focus on the following strands are invited:

 

Students as partners in building an inclusive and diverse culture

  • empowering students in learning
  • co-creating programmes for optimised learning
  • learning through being exposed to knowledge and values different to one’s own

Assessing learning in an inclusive and diverse context

  • creating assessments (e.g., tests, tasks, projects, assignments) that embrace elements of diversity and inclusivity
  • evaluating the effectiveness of programmes and/or learning environments

Curricular and co-curricular designs reflecting diversity and inclusivity

  • supporting learning by leveraging on diversity
  • harnessing benefits of learning experiences through curriculum design
  • developing or enhancing academic, co-academic and co-curricular programmes directed at cultivating a culture of diversity and inclusivity
  • building academic, co-academic and co-curricular spaces that are diverse and inclusive
  • teaching and learning approaches and practices that support diversity and inclusivity

Technology-enhanced practices for a diverse and inclusive learning environment

  • developing online practices to engage diverse students
  • leveraging technology to optimise learning

We invite anyone in the NUS community who is involved in learning, research, and teaching activities in formal and informal contexts.
