If we want to nurture intellectually curious learners, they need to be stimulated by good questions and in the process, also become socialised into the habit of asking questions. Socrates ‘taught’ his students by asking questions which prompted them to find the answers for themselves. This continues to be one of the most effective ways of teaching; guiding students in discovery and learning through key questions that provide some structure and direction to the lesson. These need to be carefully planned, though of course, there may be other questions of a more spontaneous nature raised in response to the classroom situation.
